Just as they are about to confront Robotnik, Tails gets knocked off of the platform, Sonic unable to reach him in time. Some time after that, Sonic and Tails meet up once again, and Sonic allows Tails to tag along with him. Before Tails can follow him, he is captured by a flying capsule. In an effort to escape, Sonic jumps into the water. Sonic tries to run away, but Tails flies up to the platform Sonic is standing on. When he turns around, he sees Tails, who is ecstatic to see him. After a while, Sonic begins to feel that someone is following him. Some time later, a robot appears and begins to attack Tails, who is able to defeat it. Tails, amazed at the sight, sets out to follow the blue blur. Just as it is about to attack Tails, Sonic appears, destroying the Badnik and hurrying off. There, Tails is seen looking awkwardly at a Moto bug that seems to be asleep, and tries to touch it, but it awakes.
Later on, after duking it out with Robotnik, Sonic heads off into Star Shore Zone. There, he catches sight of the nearly completed Death Egg and speeds off to stop its impending launch.
